Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Yangjiayuan, Fangqi Township, Lianhua County, Jiangxi. It was named by Zhu Zhenggang in 1993.


Lithology and Thickness

Limestone, Claystone and Anhydrite. Gray-black to black limestone and marl intercalated with minor thin-bedded shale and carbonaceous shale. In the borehole, the middle and upper parts of the formation is intercalated with several layers of anhydrite (evaporite) and dolomite. Thickness 84−320 m.


Lithology Pattern: 
Shallow-marine marl


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformable contact with the underlying Devonian Yanghu Fm. But, Devon strat column for Jiangxi indicates that Sanmentan Fm is the uppermost Devonian unit here)

Upper contact

Conformable contact with the overlying Zishan Fm

The Lower part yields Brachiopods Eochoristites sp., Rhipidomella sp., Schuchertella sp., etc.; the Upper part yields Fusulinid Eostaffella sp., Corals Kueichouphyllum sp., Heterocaninia sp., Syringopora sp., etc.;
